Which Amavasya Falls In May — Somvati Or Bhaumvati? Find Out Here

Somvati Amavasya 2025 Exact Date: The Jyeshtha Amavasya falls in May, but there's confusion about its date. Let’s find out whether it will be Somvati Amavasya or Bhaumvati Amavasya this month.

Somvati Amavasya 2025: In Hinduism, the day of Amavasya holds great spiritual and religious importance. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Panchang, Amavasya falls on the 15th day of each lunar month. It is considered highly auspicious for rituals such as holy bathing, charity, fasting, worship, and offering tarpan to ancestors.

In May 2025, Jyeshtha Amavasya will be observed, which holds even greater significance. As per religious belief, this is the day when Lord Shani was born, and hence Shani Jayanti is celebrated on this day. Additionally, the Vat Savitri Vrat, a revered fast observed by married women for the longevity of their husbands, is also performed on Jyeshtha Amavasya.

Somvati Or Bhaumvati Amavasya: What Will It Be In May 2025?

There has been some confusion this year regarding the exact date of Jyeshtha Amavasya. Some sources claim it will fall on Monday, May 26, while others suggest Tuesday, May 27. If Amavasya is observed on May 26 (Monday), it will be known as Somvati Amavasya, as any Amavasya falling on a Monday carries the name Somvati and is considered highly auspicious.

However, if Amavasya falls on Tuesday, May 27, it will be called Bhaumvati Amavasya, since Amavasya falling on a Tuesday is referred to as Bhaumvati.

Confirmed Date Of Jyeshtha Amavasya 2025

According to the Hindu Panchang, the Amavasya of Jyeshtha month will begin at 10:54 AM on Monday, May 26, 2025, and will end at 8:30 AM on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Based on Udaya Tithi, Jyeshtha Amavasya will be observed on Tuesday, May 27, which means it will be recognised as Bhaumvati Amavasya. On this day, devotees will perform rituals such as bathing, donating, and offering tarpan to ancestors. Shani Jayanti will also be celebrated on this date.
