Narak Chaturdashi 2024: Know Puja Muhurat And Things Avoid To Bring Prosperity

Narak Chaturdashi is observed a day before Diwali, is also known as Chhoti Diwali or Narak Chaudas. Performing certain actions on this day is believed to invite troubles.

Narak Chaturdashi 2024: The festival of Diwali spans five days, beginning with Dhanteras, and includes the observance of Narak Chaturdashi, or Choti Diwali, a day before the main Diwali celebration. According to the Panchang, Narak Chaturdashi falls on the fourteenth day (Chaturdashi) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the Hindu month of Kartik.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shri Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura on this day, freeing 16,000 captive maidens. This triumph over evil is the reason this day is celebrated as Narak Chaturdashi.

Narak Chaturdashi Date And Timing In 2024:

This year, Narak Chaturdashi falls on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. Initially, there was some confusion about the exact date due to the overlap of the Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi, which begins on October 30 at 1:15 p.m. and ends on October 31 at 3:52 p.m. Following the tradition of celebrating this day during the evening (Pradosh Kaal), Yam Deep lighting rituals will be observed on October 30, while the Roop Chaudas bath will be performed on the morning of October 31.

Significance Of Rituals And Restrictions On Narak Chaturdashi:

Narak Chaturdashi is marked by bathing, lighting lamps (Deepdan), performing special prayers, and fasting, all of which are believed to bring prosperity and happiness to one’s home. However, there are also specific actions to avoid on this day, as they are considered inauspicious and may invite negative consequences.

Things To Avoid On Narak Chaturdashi:

  • Cleanliness is essential on Narak Chaturdashi, especially in the southern direction of the home, which represents the direction of Yama (the god of death). Dirt in this direction may anger Yama Dev and one's ancestors.
  • Avoid stepping on or mishandling the broom during household cleaning.
  • It is advised to abstain from non-vegetarian food on this day, as it is seen as disrespectful to engage in actions that cause harm to living beings.
  • Refrain from donating sesame oil on this day, as it is thought to adversely affect one’s financial well-being.
