What Is The Meaning Of Sangam?

Sangam means 'confluence' or 'union.' It refers to the place where two or more water streams merge. This location is considered highly auspicious and sacred for divine activities.

The Significance Of Sangam Snan

  • According to the Brahma Purana, bathing at the Sangam is as meritorious as performing an Ashwamedha Yajna.
  • The Matsya Purana states that the virtue gained from traveling to ten thousand or more holy places is equivalent to bathing at the Sangam during the month of Magh.
  • As per the Agni Purana, daily bathing in Prayagraj is as rewarding as donating millions of cows every day.
  • The Padma Purana mentions that anyone who bathes at the Triveni Sangam attains liberation.
  • Sage Bhrigu advised Sage Gautam that cursed Indra was freed from his curse due to bathing during the Magh month. Therefore, Sangam bathing during the confluence of Magh month and Mahakumbh is considered the ultimate act of penance.

How Many People Will Take A Dip At The Mahakumbh On Makar Sankranti?

Every year, a fair is held at the Sangam bank during the month of Magha. In 2025, the Mahakumbh will take place, and the second royal bath will occur on Makar Sankranti. Millions of devotees take a dip to earn spiritual merit. This year, it is expected that 70 million devotees will take a dip at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj on Makar Sankranti.
