The name "Magh" comes from the Magha Nakshatra, which coincides with the full moon during this period. This auspicious month is especially dear to Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna. Bathing in holy rivers and visiting pilgrimage sites during this time are said to free an individual from the cycle of birth and death.
