When Is Jyeshtha Amavasya In 2025?

This year, two dates are being mentioned for Jyeshtha Amavasya—May 26 and May 27. According to the Hindu calendar (Panchang), Amavasya Tithi will begin at 12:11 PM on May 26 and end at 8:31 PM on May 27. Considering the tradition of observing fasts and rituals based on Udayatithi (the day on which the moon phase ends at sunrise), Jyeshtha Amavasya will be observed on May 27, 2025.

Religious Importance Of Jyeshtha Amavasya:

Jyeshtha Amavasya is marked by sacred rituals such as holy baths, charity, fasting, and offerings to ancestors (Pitru Tarpan). It is believed that this Amavasya grants liberation from ten types of sins. This year, the Amavasya falls on a Tuesday, making it even more significant as Bhaumvati Amavasya.

Additionally, this Amavasya is also known as Bada Amavasya due to the tradition of worshipping the Vat (Banyan) tree. The day is considered highly favorable for performing rituals for the peace of departed ancestors. Bathing in the Ganges and performing charitable acts on this day are believed to absolve a person from ten specific sins.

What Are The 10 Types Of Sins?

According to Hindu scriptures, there are ten primary types of sins categorised into three groups—physical (kāyik), verbal (vācik), and mental (mānasik).

  • Physical sins (Kāyik Pāp): These include stealing, violence, and illicit relationships.
  • Verbal sins (Vācik Pāp): These involve lying, speaking harshly or inappropriately, gossiping, and defaming others.
  • Mental sins (Mānasik Pāp): These include harboring ill thoughts, being complicit in dishonesty, or desiring someone else’s wealth or possessions.

How To Attain Spiritual Cleansing On This Day:

It is believed that taking a holy dip at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar during Brahma Muhurta, chanting the mantras of Maa Ganga, and engaging in acts of charity can lead to the destruction of these ten types of sins. Devotees are encouraged to observe the day with sincerity to receive divine blessings and attain peace of mind.
