Why Is Non-Vegetarian Food Avoided During Navratri?

Navratri is regarded as a highly sacred period. During these nine days, maintaining purity is of utmost importance. According to astrology, when an individual gains control over their senses, they can connect with the divine without distractions. Consuming improper foods can hinder one's ability to remain spiritually focused.

From an Ayurvedic and astrological perspective, tamasic foods, including non-vegetarian dishes, are believed to induce emotions such as anger, arrogance, laziness, and desire. This is why consuming meat is considered inappropriate during Navratri, as it is believed to divert an individual from the path of spirituality.

The Tradition Of Eating Non-Vegetarian Food During Navratri In Bengal:

Interestingly, while many communities abstain from non-vegetarian food during Navratri, some traditions allow it. In Bengal, for instance, consuming meat during the Sharadiya Navratri is customary. It is believed that during Durga Puja, Goddess Durga visits her devotees' homes with her children and stays with them. To honor her presence, Bengalis prepare all kinds of delicacies, including sweets, fish, and meat, as part of their offerings.

Additionally, in certain Hindu communities, the sacrificial meat of a goat offered to the Goddess is considered prasad and consumed as a divine offering. This cultural diversity showcases how Navratri traditions vary across India, with each community observing the festival in its unique way.
