Aadi Krithigai 2025: Date, Puja Timings, Significance & How The Festival Is Celebrated

Aadi Krithigai 2025 Date: Aadi Krithigai, celebrated in the Tamil month of Aadi, honours Lord Muruga.

The sacred Tamil month of Aadi—spanning mid-July to mid-August—ushers in a spiritually charged atmosphere across Tamil Nadu, marked by devotion, rituals and temple festivities. Among its most revered days is Aadi Krithigai, a festival dedicated to Lord Muruga, the divine warrior son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Aadi Krithigai Date & Timings

This year, Aadi Krithigai falls on Sunday, July 20, with the Krithigai Nakshatram beginning at 12:37 AM and ending at 10:53 PM, giving devotees an entire day to immerse themselves in worship and spiritual reflection.

Aadi Krithigai Significance

Aadi Krithigai holds deep spiritual meaning for Murugan devotees, who view the deity as a symbol of courage, wisdom and divine love. Traditionally associated with the Krithigai star, which is closely linked to Muruga, the day is observed with fervent rituals across Murugan temples, particularly in Tamil Nadu.

From early morning, devotees take ritual baths, adorn their homes with kolams and prepare for special pujas. Temples resound with the chanting of “Kanda Sasti Kavasam”, and the air is fragrant with flowers and incense as abhishekams and archanais are performed throughout the day.

How Do People Celebrate Aadi Krithigai

Fasting is an important part of the observance. While some devotees practice complete fasting, consuming only water, others observe partial fasts, abstaining from salt and spices. The act of fasting is seen not only as penance but as a means to attain inner purification and divine connection.

Temples dedicated to Lord Muruga—from Palani to Tiruchendur—are expected to see large gatherings, with special processions, musical renditions, and community feasts bringing devotees together in celebration.
