June 25 To Be Observed As 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' To Honour Emergency Victims: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that June 25 will be observed as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to honour the victims of Emergency 1975.

PM Modi-led government on Friday announced that June 25 will be observed as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to honour the victims of the 1975 Emergency. The announcement was made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Announcing the decision, Amit Shah posted on X: "On June 25, 1975, the then PM Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of a dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of our democracy by imposing the Emergency on the nation. Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars for no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced."

"The Government of India has decided to observe the 25th of June every year as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas.' This day will commemorate the massive contributions of all those who endured the inhuman pains of the 1975 Emergency," he added.

The official notification by Home Ministry read: "Whereas, a proclamation of Emergency was made on 25th June, 1975, following which there was gross abuse of power by the Government of the day and people of India were subjected to excesses and atrocities; And whereas, people of India have abiding faith in the Constitution of India and the power of India’s resilient democracy."

It further stated that the Government of India, therefore, declared June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to "pay tribute to all those who suffered and fought against the gross abuse of power during the period of Emergency."

The official statement also said that the day will be observed as decided in order to remind the people of India to avoid supporting gross abuse of power in any manner in future.

'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' Will Keep The Flame Of Freedom Alive In Every Indian: Shah

The Union Home Minister also wrote on X, that the observance of 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' will keep the flame of freedom alive in every Indian.

"The decision made by the government led by PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji is intended to honor the spirit of millions who struggled to revive democracy despite facing inexplicable persecution at the hands of an oppressive government," Shah said.

He further stated: "The observance of 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' will help keep the eternal flame of individual freedom and the defence of our democracy alive in every Indian, thus preventing dictatorial forces like the Congress from repeating those horrors."

'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’: PM Modi Says Day Will Be 'Reminder' Of When Constitution Was ‘Trampled Over’

PM Modi also posted on X about his government's decision to observe June 25 as Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas. He said the day will serve as a reminder of when the Indian Constitution was "trampled over".

"To observe 25th June as #SamvidhaanHatyaDiwas will serve as a reminder of what happens when the Constitution of India was trampled over. It is also a day to pay homage to each and every person who suffered due to the excesses of the Emergency, a Congress unleashed dark phase of Indian history," PM Modi stated, underlining the signficance behind the decision.

Reminder Of Sacrifices By Victims Fighting Against Congress's Dictatorial Mentality: JP Nadda

Union Minister JP Nadda posted on X that June 25 will remind Indians of the importance of democracy every year and how victims suffered due to "Congress's dictatorial mentality".

"June 25, 1975, was a dark day when the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's dictatorial mentality imposed 'Emergency' on the country, murdering the democracy enshrined in our Constitution. The central government has decided to observe June 25th every year as 'Constitution Murder Day.' This day will remind us of the sacrifices and dedication of all our great leaders who suffered and passed away while fighting against the Congress's dictatorial mentality to protect the Constitution and restore democracy. I express my gratitude to the Prime Minister for this decision, which will remind us of the importance of democracy every year,"
