'Opposing Party Or Individual Should Not Turn Against Country': PM Modi On Harmohan Singh Yadav's Death Anniversary
PM Modi Speech Today: Noting President of India Droupadi Murmu's swearing-in for the post earlier in the day, PM Modi termed it as "a very big day for our democracy".
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday gave a video message at a gathering honouring former Rajya Sabha MP and Samajwadi Party member Harmonhan Singh Yadav on the former's tenth death anniversary. PM Modi paid his tribute to the leader and commemorated his participation against the Emergency.
"When the country's democracy was crushed during the Emergency, all the major parties came together and fought to save the Constitution. Chaudhary Harmohan Singh Yadav Ji was also a fighting soldier of that struggle. "Today is a very big day for our democracy as the new President has been sworn in. For the first time after independence, a woman from tribal community is going to lead our country," PM Modi said further.
"It is the responsibility of every political party that opposing a party or an individual should not turn against the country. Ideologies have their own place but, country is first, society is first, nation is first," the Prime Minister said during his address to the gathering.
A towering figure and leader of the Yadav community, Harmohan Singh Yadav entered politics at the age of 31 and was elected as a local Pradhan in the year 1952. Between 1970 and 1990 he held several poisitions inculding that of Member of Legislative Council and Member of Legislative Assembly in Uttar Pradesh.
In 1991, he was for the first time chosen for Rajya Sabha where he was a member of various parliamentary commitees. In 1997, he was again nominated for a second term to serve in Rajya Sabha. He also held the position of national chairperson for 'Akhil Bharatiya Yadav Mahasabha'.
Harmohan Singh Yadav was a frontrunner for farmer rights and the fought the Emergency while being imprisoned. Ram Manohar Lohiya and Chaudhary Charan Singh were Yadav's close friends.
He was a significant Samajwadi Party figurehead and Mulayam Singh Yadav was a personal friend of his. Harmohan Yadav suggested to the Yadav Mahasabha that Mulayam Singh Yadav take over as their leader following the passing of Chaudhary Charan Singh. Harmohan Yadav and his family relocated to a new area where the majority of the population was Sikh six years prior to the anti-Sikh riots of 1984
