Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act, 2019 Comes Into Force From Today

The new Act has brought about a considerable increase in the penalties prescribed in the old Act, informed Additional Director General of Police (ADG) RK Vij here on Saturday.

The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, will come into force from today. The new Act has brought about a considerable increase in the penalties prescribed in the old Act, informed Additional Director General of Police (ADG) RK Vij here on Saturday. Dealing about the provisions of the Act, he said that for over speeding light vehicles will be fined between Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 while medium weight vehicles will have to cough out Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000. In such cases there is provision of cancelling the driver’s licence which is re-issued only after the driver finishes the refresher course. “In case of drunken driving fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed,” he said while adding violation of rules like red light jump, stop sign violation, using electronic devices while driving, overtaking in dangerous way, driving from other direction will also attract serious penalties. In case of minor driving vehicle, the vehicle owners and parents will have bear the brunt. In case of traffic rule violation by a minor it will be considered their parent’s or vehicle owner’s fault and they will be charged accordingly. The Act has provisions for a fine of Rs 25,000 and imprisonment up to 3 years. The vehicle registration will be cancelled for 12 months and the minor will not be issued licence till 25 years of age, the ADG informed.
