3 Held For Impersonating Jay Shah To Con Manipur MLAs: 'Sought Rs 4 Cr For Ministerial Posts'

The scamsters made calls impersonating Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah and demanding money from MLAs "in exchange for ministerial posts" .

The Manipur Police arrested three individuals from Delhi, for making calls impersonating Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah and demanding money from MLAs "in exchange for ministerial posts" in the conflict-torn state. The scamsters reportedly tried to extort Rs 4 crore for each post.

The three were brought to Imphal on Tuesday for further legal action.

According to a report by India Today, an FIR has been registered, and the police have invoked Sections 318(4) for cheating and fraud and 319(2) for impersonation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in their investigation.

The report said that on Tuesday around 8:29 am, the three were brought to Dehradun via Delhi by Imphal police led by Sub-Inspector Farooque Sheikh on an Indigo flight in connection with the case.

The three fraudsters have been identified as Priyanshu Pant (19) from Mayur Vihar Phase III in Delhi, Uvaish Ahmed (19) from Etah in Uttar Pradesh and Gaurav Nath (19) from Delhi's Ghariapur, according to India Today.

Manipur police officials stated that the department conducted an investigation and initiated legal action after calls were received by MLAs and leaders, including state assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh. They were duped by the fraudsters who claimed to be the Union Minister’s Home Minister’s son.

The suspects tried to influence and mislead the legislators by exploiting the ongoing political situation in the state, as per an IANS report.

Jay Shah-Uttarakhand BJP MLA Adesh Chauhan Incident 

One of the accused, Priyanshu Pant, allegedly impersonated Jay Shah and demanded Rs 5 lakh from Uttarakhand BJP MLA Adesh Chauhan, was arrested in Delhi. After Pant was interrogated, the other suspects were also apprehended in the capital. The trio reportedly attempted to extort money from two other Uttarakhand legislators by promising to make them ministers.

According to IANS, Chauhan received a call on February 16 from an unknown number, with the caller posing as Jay Shah and requesting Rs 5 lakh for the party fund. One of Chauhan's associates promptly reported the incident to the police, who launched an investigation. With the help of mobile phone records, the suspects were tracked and arrested in Delhi.
