The Andhra Pradesh High Court has directed the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to consider Vennam Jyothi Surekha for the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Surekha, India's top-ranked compound archer, has consistently brought national and international glory to the country with her stellar performances.
The High Court of Andhra Pradesh, after a thorough review of the matter, ruled in her favour, recognising her achievements and her claim to the country's highest sporting honour.
The ruling sets a precedent for fairness and transparency in recognising sporting excellence reinforcing the judiciary’s role in safeguarding athletes' rights. Jyothi approached the high court, asserting that her nomination for the Khel Ratna was overlooked despite fulfilling the eligibility criteria and securing more points than the awardees.
Representing her, senior advocate Unnam Muralidhar Rao argued that the selection process determines eligibility based on a scoring system, where 80% of the weightage is assigned to the medal tally, while the remaining 20% is based on factors left to the selection committee's discretion, as per a report on Times of India.
This verdict marks a historic moment, as it is the first instance where judicial intervention has influenced the selection process for the Khel Ratna Award.
Meanwhile, Jyoti has clinched multiple gold medals in the compound archery event at prestigious competitions such as the Archery World Cup, World Archery Championships, and the Asian Games. In 2023, Jyoti made history by becoming the first Indian archer to win a gold medal at the World Archery Championships and to secure multiple gold medals at the Asian Games. She also won three gold medals at the 2022 Asian Games, making her the first Indian to achieve such a feat in archery.
In 2017, she was honored with the Arjuna Award, India's second-highest sporting accolade, becoming the youngest recipient from South India.
Despite her remarkable achievements, one of her major regrets is that her category is not included in the Olympic Games.
