President's Rule has been imposed in Manipur four days after the resignation of N Biren Singh as the Chief Minister. The Home Ministry on Thursday issued a notification regarding the imposition of President's Rule in the violence-hit state.

The resignation of Chief Minister Biren Singh came at a time when a no-confidence motion (by the Congress) was looming in the state assembly. N Biren Singh resigned on February 9. Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and top personnel from paramilitary forces held a meeting at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday. During this, Bhalla was apprised of the deployment and operational activities of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The decision to impose President's Rule is taken under Article 356 of the Constitution when the state government cannot function in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.

BJP's Northeast in-charge and MP Sambit Patra is on a tour of Manipur these days and on Wednesday, February 12, indicating the BJP's focus on this. Earlier this month, when assembly Speaker T Satyabrata Singh was called to Delhi, there were signs of a shift in the power balance in Manipur.

Before resigning from the post of Chief Minister, N Biren Singh had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. N Biren Singh had faced criticism over the way he handled the caste conflict in the state. The BJP had hoped to handle the situation after N Biren Singh's resignation to avoid a crisis, but President's Rule couldn't be avoided.
