Three-Year-Old Thrown Into River By Mother Was Sexually Assaulted, Says Autopsy; Relative Held

A post-mortem revealed the child was sexually assaulted before her death, leading to the arrest of a male relative who confessed to the crime.

The Kerala police have arrested a close male relative in connection with the tragic death of a three-year-old girl child who was thrown into Chalakudy river by her mother earlier this week. The arrest comes after a post-mortem report confirmed the child had been sexually assaulted shortly before she was killed.

Mother Throws Child In Chalakudy River

The disturbing chain of events began on Monday evening when Sandhya, the girl's mother, returned home alone, prompting concern from her own mother, Ally, who noticed her granddaughter Kalyani was missing. Sandhya initially gave evasive responses, at one point saying Kalyani had "gone" and later claiming she vanished while on a bus.

Based on the complaint, police launched an urgent search and combed CCTV footage near Chalakudy river at the time of the disappearance. When confronted with the evidence, Sandhya eventually admitted to throwing her daughter into the river.

Local residents recovered the woman’s body from the water in the early hours of Tuesday. Sandhya was arrested and has since been remanded to judicial custody on charges of murder.

Autopsy Reveals Sexual Assault

The case took a grim turn on Wednesday when forensic findings revealed the woman had been sexually assaulted shortly before her death. This prompted investigators to question three close male relatives. Following prolonged interrogation, one of them confessed to the assault, leading to his arrest, as per a report on IANS.

The police also reportedly found injuries on the girl's body, reported PTI.

According to police, the sexual assault took place a day prior to the murder. Investigators suspect Sandhya may have discovered the abuse and, driven by psychological trauma and despair, carried out the killing. However, they are still probing the precise motive.

Additional family tensions have surfaced during the investigation. Police have assured that a comprehensive investigation is underway and that all parties involved in the abuse and subsequent murder will be held accountable.
