INX Media Case: ED Files Chargesheet Against Chidambaram, Son Karti

The case dates back to 2017 when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered an FIR in INX media case alleging irregularities in FIPB clearance to the group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007.

New Delhi: Latest development in the INX Media case suggests that Enforcement Directorate has filed a chargesheet against former Union Minister P Chidambaram, his son Karti P Chidambaram and others, in a Delhi Court on Tuesday. Earlier this year in January right after Chidambaram's release from Tihar jail, ED had questioned the former minister in connection with money laundering probe into alleged aviation-related financial irregularities said to have occurred during the UPA dispensation. The case dates back to 2017 when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered an FIR in the INX media case alleging irregularities in FIPB clearance to the group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007. Later in 2018, ED had lodged a money laundering case in this regard following which CBI summoned Chidambaram for questioning. On August 21, P. Chidambaram was arrested in the case and sent to four-day CBI custody, which was periodically extended till September 5. In the followup of interrogation, ED up on Delhi court's permission, arrested Chidambaram, further questioned hin in Tihar Jail and sent him to remand till October 24. However, the Supreme Court had granted bail to Chidambaram in the corruption case. In January, the questioning of Chidambaram came again, first time after his release from the Tihar jail where he spent 106 days in connection with the INX Media money laundering case. He was released from Tihar on December 4 last year after he was granted bail by the Supreme Court. The former FM was granted bail by the top court on condition of either not giving any press interviews or making public comments regarding him or other co-accused in the INX Media money laundering case.
