MEA Condemns Hindu Leader’s Killing In Bangladesh: ‘Stop Minority Persecution Without Inventing Excuses’
The MEA condemned the murder of Hindu minority leader Bhabesh Chandra Roy in Bangladesh, citing a pattern of persecution against religious minorities.
India on Saturday strongly condemned the alleged abduction and killing of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a Hindu minority leader in Bangladesh, and urged the interim government in Dhaka to fulfill its responsibility of safeguarding minority communities. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), this incident is not isolated but part of a worrying trend of targeted violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh.
In a post on social media, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have noted with distress the abduction and brutal killing of Shri Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a Hindu minority leader in Bangladesh. This killing follows a pattern of systematic persecution of Hindu minorities under the interim government even as the perpetrators of previous such events roam with impunity. We condemn this incident and once again remind the interim government to live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities, including Hindus, without inventing excuses or making distinctions.”

Congress President Kharge Targets Modi Govt Over Bangladesh Hindu Leader's Killing
The Indian National Congress also condemned the killing and urged the Centre to take up the matter with Dhaka. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge expressed concern over the situation of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, stating that they are “constantly being persecuted.”
In a post in Hindi on X, Kharge said, “The brutal murder of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a prominent leader of the Hindu community, is proof that Narendra Modi ji’s smiling meeting with the chief advisor of Bangladesh was a failure.”

Kharge also claimed that, according to a government reply in Parliament, there had been 76 attacks on Hindus in the previous two months, resulting in the deaths of 23 individuals. He further criticised recent remarks by the chief advisor of Bangladesh regarding India’s northeastern states, calling them “condemnable and disappointing.” He alleged that the atrocities against minorities, human rights violations, and attempts to erase the legacy of the 1971 Liberation War were aimed at weakening India-Bangladesh relations.
“The Congress party has always stood for peace and prosperity of all people of Bangladesh, from 1971 to today,” Kharge added.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh also condemned the killing, stating on X, “The Indian National Congress strongly condemns the brutal killing of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a prominent leader of the Hindu community in Dinajpur, Bangladesh. The abduction and assault leading to his tragic death is a chilling reminder of the growing sense of insecurity among religious minorities in the region.”

Ramesh noted that this was not an isolated incident and cited “repeated and deeply disturbing instances” of attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh, including desecration of Hindu temples and targeted assaults on homes and businesses.
“This pattern of intimidation and brutality cannot be ignored,” he said. “The Congress urges the Centre to take up the matter with the highest urgency and prevail upon the government of Bangladesh to ensure a swift, transparent investigation and bring the culprits to justice.”
He reiterated the party’s demand for the protection of the safety, dignity, and rights of religious minorities in Bangladesh. “Silence and inaction are not options when such targeted violence is allowed to take root,” he said, adding that the Congress stands in solidarity with the Hindu community in Bangladesh and all those who believe in secularism, justice and human rights.
