'Classical Language Tamil Can Function Independently': CM Stalin Says On International Mother Language Day

Stalin expressed his hope that Tamil language would gain global recognition, saying, “May our unique classical language spread throughout the world!”

On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, Tamil Nadu leaders took to social media to emphasize on preserving Tamil. In a message shared on social media platform X,  Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stressed the unique stature of Tamil as a classical language capable of functioning independently without reliance on other languages. Stalin highlighted the antiquity and self-sufficiency of Tamil asserting that it is a language of immense historical and cultural significance.

“The archaeological excavations in Tamil Nadu have consistently established the greatness of the ancient Tamils. Their mother tongue, Tamil, is not only a language with admirable antiquity but also a classical language with the power to function independently without the help of other languages,” Stalin stated.

Stalin expressed his hope that the language would gain global recognition, saying, “May our unique classical language spread throughout the world!”

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami also marked the occasion by reaffirming his party’s commitment to linguistic diversity and the preservation of Tamil. In a post on X, Palaniswami said, on International Mother Language Day, which celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity, we will always respect our mother tongue #Tamil, and all languages, and the feelings of those who speak our language with equality.” At the same time, attempts to impose some other language on the Tamils will be defeated.” He added that any attempts to impose another language on Tamils would be firmly resisted.

BJP state chief K Annamalai, while acknowledging the importance of mother tongues, highlighted the Central government’s National Education Policy (NEP), which advocates for basic education up to the fifth standard to be imparted in the mother tongue. Annamalai stressed the need to embrace multilingualism while staying rooted in Tamil. 

“In today's digital world, it is essential to connect languages and create opportunities to learn multiple languages. Let us learn multiple languages based on our mother tongue, Tamil. Let us make the glory of the Tamil language known to the world,” Annamalai said on X.
