Chennai Gets Moderate Rainfall, Thunderstorms; IMD Issues Yellow Alert For 8 Districts In Tamil Nadu

While isolated rainfall was reported across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal remained dry.

Chennai woke up to cloudy skies and light to moderate showers on Wednesday morning as rainfall that began late Tuesday night continued across parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas and issued a yellow alert for eight districts in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

Yellow Alert In 8 TN Districts

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre’s 7 AM bulletin, light to moderate rain is likely at one or two places over Nilgiris and Coimbatore, with similar conditions expected in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Tiruppur, and Theni.

“Thunderstorm and lightning with light to moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas,” the IMD stated, urging residents to remain cautious due to the possibility of waterlogging and slippery roads. Traffic disruptions were also flagged as a potential concern in low-lying parts of Chennai and adjoining districts.

While isolated rainfall was reported across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal remained dry.

Despite the showers, temperatures across the state remained relatively high. Madurai Airport recorded the highest maximum temperature at 40.2°C, while Coimbatore Airport noted the lowest minimum at 22.4°C.

The IMD added that there has been no significant change in maximum temperatures, though a slight downward trend is expected in several parts of Tamil Nadu over the coming days.

Tamil Nadu Weather Update

The rainfall in Chennai is set to continue on July 4. In a bulletin, IMD said, "Thunderstorm and Lightning with Light/Moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas."

Overall, IMD said that heavy rain will be experienced at isolated places over Ghat areas on July 4. IMD said, "Light to moderate rain at isolated places with thunderstorm & lightning at one or two places is likely to occur over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal area.
