Govt Extends CBI Director Praveen Sood’s Tenure By One Year

The tenure of Praveen Sood, as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has been extended for one year.

Based on the recommendations of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Wednesday, the tenure of IPS Praveen Sood, as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has been extended for one year beyond May 24, 2025.

The development came on the day when India carried out the targeted and coordinated airstrikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir to avenge the Pahalgam terror attacks.

Earlier serving as Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP), took charge as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on May 23, 2023, replacing Subodh Kumar Jaiswal. He was the 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Karnataka cadre.

Prior to joining as CBI Director and serving as Karnataka DGP, he had also held various important positions amid his 37 years of long tenure as an IPS, according to a report by the news agency ANI.

Praveen Sood As Advisor To Government of Mauritius

He has served as an advisor to the Government of Mauritius and has overseen investigations into several high-profile cases involving wealthy individuals, as well as those with inter-state and international dimensions. His work has included probing crimes related to cybercrime and information technology.

In Karnataka, he played a key role in enhancing the CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems) and ICJS (Interoperable Criminal Justice System) infrastructure, in coordination with the judiciary.

Praveen Sood holds a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Delhi and completed postgraduate studies in Public Policy and Management at IIM Bangalore and the Maxwell School of Governance, Syracuse University, New York.

He received the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2011 and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2002. Shortly after assuming office, Sood held a meeting with CBI officers.
