JD(U) Leader Dismisses Speaker's Claim On No-Confidence Motion
In a recent development, Shrawan Kumar, a senior leader from the Janata Dal (United) and a minister in Bihar, refuted claims made by assembly Speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary regarding the timing of information about a no-confidence motion. Choudhary stated that he was informed of the motion only on Wednesday and could take his time in making a decision, as per the rules.
Kumar, also serving as the chief whip of JD(U), countered this assertion, affirming that he had personally submitted the notice for the motion of no confidence to the assembly secretariat on January 28. According to him, the 14-day period for action on the motion expires on February 11, just before the commencement of the budget session on February 12, during which the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government will seek a trust vote, news agency PTI reported.
"We hope that the Speaker will take an appropriate decision before February 11," he said, as per PTI.
Choudhary, who belongs to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the former ally dumped by JD(U) president and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, reiterated his stance on not resigning before the trust vote. He asserted his commitment to follow the prescribed timeline for addressing the no-confidence motion against himself.
"I am not going to resign. I will be in the assembly on February 12 and conduct proceedings of the House as per rules," Choudhary told reporters.
BJP Likely to Secure Speaker's Post
With the election of a new Speaker scheduled for February 12, speculation mounts around potential candidates. Sources told PTI that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will likely secure the post. Among the names circulating for the Speaker's role are senior BJP leaders former deputy chief minister Tarkishore Prasad and Nand Kishore Yadav.
This recent tussle mirrors a similar episode from 2022 when BJP leader Vijay Kumar Sinha refused to resign amid political upheaval. Back then, Nitish Kumar had exited the NDA and formed a new government with the Mahagathbandhan. Sinha eventually announced his resignation on the floor of the House, bypassing a no-confidence vote. Currently, he holds the position of Deputy CM in the new NDA government.
