World Tuberculosis Day 2025 — Know Cause, Symptoms, When To See A Doctor, And More

On this World Tuberculosis Day, know about the causes, symptoms, and the importance of early medical intervention to combat this disease.

Tuberculosis is a condition which primarily affects the lungs. It can affect other organs like bones, lymph nodes, skin, brain, gut and various other organs.

Causes Of Tuberculosis:

  • Bacterial Infection: Tuberculosis is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • Mode Of Transmission: This is an opportunistic bacteria and spreads by droplet infection from person to person.
  • Weakened Immunity: Individuals with weak or compromised immune systems are more vulnerable to this infection.

Symptoms Of Tuberculosis:

  • Early Signs Of Tuberculosis: In the primary stage, symptoms may include lethargy, body pain, feverish feeling, loss of appetite, and mild cough. In this stage, the person may not be infective to others.
  • Late-Stage Indications: In the later stage, the symptoms may include severe weight loss, low-grade fever, chronic cough with blood-tinged expectoration, chest pain, severe weakness, etc.

When To See A Doctor:

If any of the symptoms, like weight loss, low-grade fever, chronic cough, etc., are present, the patient needs to see a doctor immediately. After necessary tests, treatment should be started immediately and is most of the time completely curable.

Tuberculosis Diet:

The right diet is a high-protein, high-calorie, high-energy diet which may includes:

  • What To Eat: Animal protein, fish, eggs, fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables and various types of nuts, legumes and lentils.
  • What To Avoid: Processed and frozen food is to be avoided.
