Parenting Tips: Foods That Cause Allergic Reactions In Babies - Know Symptoms And Treatment

Food allergy in babies: When the baby starts taking solid food initially, they may become allergic to some foods. Hence utmost care must be taken while introducing solid foods to your child.

Food Allergy in babies:  Six months after birth, the baby should only be fed breast milk. This keeps the child healthy and fit. Mother's milk also increases the immunity of the child. However, during the transition from milk to solid foods, children may become allergic to some food items.

Being allergic to something is a common problem among children between the age of 6 months to 3 years. But sometimes it may lead to other problems and complications as well.

Which children are more prone to food allergies?

Children who are 6 to 12 months old are likely to develop food allergies to solid foods. In some children, the problem of allergies can last up to 3 years. There is no specific reason for allergies. But it is said that children develop allergies when their immune system overreacts.  

What foods cause allergic reactions in children?

Generally, children are allergic to foods like peanuts, fish, eggs, wheat, almonds, cashews, soy milk, soybeans, and sesame.

What are some symptoms of food allergy in children?

  • Vomiting and diarrhea  
  • Abdominal cramps and pain
  • Skin rash
  • Shortness of breath
  • Excess gas in the stomach
  • Swelling in the mouth
  • Itching and rash around the mouth
  • Continuous sneezing of baby
  • Swelling near the lips

Food allergy treatment in children

1- Whenever you introduce new food to the child, do not give anything new to eat for the next 72 hours. This will help you identify if the child is allergic to a specific type of food.
2- If the child has a food allergy, consult the doctor to know what food is the child allergic to.
3- On the advice of the doctor, exclude that particular food from the child's diet.
4- Breastfeed the child as much as possible, which will help the child recover faster.
