National Doctor's Day was initially commemorated to honour the great physician and former Chief Minister of Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, and to recognise and appreciate his contributions to medicine

New Delhi: Every year on July 1, India observes National Doctor's Day to honour Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a medical genius, politician, and freedom fighter. Dr Roy died on July 1, 1962, at 80. Coincidentally, his birthday was also on July 1, 1882. The contribution of doctors goes beyond treating patients and saving lives. They inspire one to be hopeful and optimistic during what appears to be the darkest period of their life. National Doctor's Day is an excellent occasion to recognise and thank medical professionals for their contributions to our lives.
