It’s Unfair: Aishwarya Rai Defended Abhishek Bachchan In An Old Interview
In a 2010 interview, Abhishek Bachchan was asked if he was concerned that his father Amitabh Bachchan and wife Aishwarya Rai could "overshadow" him.
New Delhi: The B-town pair, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, who frequently shared screen time, have occasionally been questioned about feeling threatened by one another's fame. Abhishek Bachchan was questioned in a 2010 interview if he worried that his father Amitabh Bachchan and wife Aishwarya Rai may "overshadow" him due to their prominence.
The old interview was during the time they were promoting their Mani Ratnam movie 'Raavan', and Aishwarya backed Abhishek. While actor-wife Aishwarya Bachchan defended her husband and referred to the question as "unfair," Abhishek Bachchan respectfully replied with a "no."
In the joint interview, Aishwarya interrupted Abhishek while he was responding to a question. She claimed that the actor was "very, very well established" and had formed a distinct career path in Hindi cinema.
In a BBC interview, Abhishek responded, "No, not at all," when asked if he was concerned about being overshadowed by Aishwarya and Amitabh Bachchan's stardom.
In the meantime, Aishwarya added,“I absolutely despise the term overshadow. I think it’s unfair that this question is posed and imposed on him (Abhishek) at each point in time because that isn’t it at all. His body of work, the kind of variety of roles… he is very, very well established and has carved a niche for himself.”
Aishwarya continued by recalling how she had been asked similar questions in the past that were not grounded in fact but rather in assumptions.
"The reason I have interrupted is because I found myself for the longest time being asked ‘So you have been a model, and you’ve been Miss World, do you find yourself only getting roles where you will be this beautiful woman?’ So it is the same way, it’s this perception that stands larger than the reality and the fact is that we are all doing very good work… I am sorry to interrupt your answer (to Abhishek)… it is the truth and truth must be said,” the actor said.

On the work front, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has recently appeared in Mani Ratnam's blockbuster 'Ponniyin Selvan: I', which has earned over Rs 500 crore globally. Abhishek Bachchan, on the other hand, last made an appearance in season 2 of 'Breathe: Into The Shadows.'
