New Delhi: The Lok Sabha yesterday (9th December), passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 following a six-hour long debate and Union Home Minister Amit Shah defending the Bill which is receiving flak. Among a total of 391 members present in the Lower House, 311 voted in favour of the Bill while 80 voted against it. PM Narendra Modi then took to his social media account and hailed the move. He wrote, "Delighted that the Lok Sabha has passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 after a rich and extensive debate. I thank the various MPs and parties that supported the Bill. This Bill is in line with India's centuries old ethos of assimilation and belief in humanitarian values." The Bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians, excluding Muslims, from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible for Indian citizenship. The Bill relaxes the requirement of residence in India from 11 years to six years for these migrants. We need to realise that this is beyond party politics as it strikes at the very heart of the idea of India. It will no longer be the country our leaders fought for. Supporting the #CAB shows his true colours, his lack of integrity and his desperate need to remain powerful at any cost. You will all be held accountable. Enjoy your temp power till then. #IndiaRejectsCAB He further tweeted, "#Jayalalithaa would have never supported #CAB. How the #AIADMK has crashed in its ethos, in her absence!"
