Sonu Nigam Says AR Rahman Is Not A Very Trained Singer: 'He Wouldn’t Call Himself A Great Singer But...'
In a recent interview, Sonu Nigam acknowledged that AR Rahman is "not a trained singer" but said that "the tone of his voice is very nice."

Renowned singer Sonu Nigam and legendary music composer AR Rahman have been collaborating since the 1990s, maintaining a strong professional bond for nearly three decades. While Sonu is celebrated for his melodious voice, Rahman, primarily a composer, has also lent his vocals to several hit songs, including 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja,' 'Tere Bina,' and 'Rehna Tu,' among others.
In a recent interview, Sonu shared his thoughts on Rahman’s singing abilities. He acknowledged that Rahman is "not a trained singer" but said that "the tone of his voice is very nice." He further remarked that even Rahman himself would not consider his singing skills extraordinary.
Sonu Nigam says AR Rahman is not a trained singer but his voice is very nice
During a conversation with O2 India, Sonu was asked to evaluate Rahman as a vocalist. He responded, “Obviously, he is not a very trained singer. The tone of his voice is very nice. He wouldn’t call himself a great singer, so what can we say? He knows his texture is very beautiful but he has never claimed to be a great singer. He is a great composer so obviously he is always in sur. The main thing is to be in sur. What is the point of a good voice texture if one is not in sur? His voice might not be great but he is always in sur because he is AR Rahman.”
When Rahman allowed him to compose a small section of a song
Apart from discussing Rahman’s singing skills, Sonu also recalled a memorable moment from their collaboration on the soundtrack of Jodha Akbar. He shared how Rahman had graciously given him the opportunity to compose a small section of the song 'Inn Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein.' Sonu recounted that during the recording session, Rahman asked him how he would approach a particular segment of the song. Sonu improvised a composition on the spot, which Rahman immediately appreciated and decided to include in the final version. “He allowed me to compose that part,” Sonu said.
“He must have tweaked a couple of things but he allowed me to work on this portion because the whole song was ready. Javed saab sent these lines later, so they were added then. So first we sang the whole song, then this portion was done later. He is quite secure. He is not someone who will say that I have to do it,” Sonu shared.
