Mahashivratri 2025: Maha Shivratri, one of the most significant Hindu festivals dedicated to Lord Shiva, will be celebrated on February 26, 2024. According to the Shiva Purana, on this auspicious day, Lord Shiva manifested as a Shivling to resolve a dispute between Brahma and Vishnu over supremacy. This divine event occurred on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalguna, which is why Maha Shivratri is observed on this day every year. Devotees observe fasts, perform special prayers, and visit Shiva temples to seek blessings.

As per the Hindu Panchang, the Chaturdashi Tithi will begin on February 26 at 11:08 AM and will end on February 27 at 8:54 AM. Devotees are encouraged to worship during the Nishita Kaal, the most sacred time for Shiva Puja.

Four Prahar Puja Timings:

Maha Shivratri holds special significance for performing rituals across four different Prahar (time slots) of the night. Each Prahar is associated with unique benefits, such as wealth, prosperity, fame, and removal of obstacles. The recommended timings are:

Performing Abhishek (ritual bathing of the Shivling) with specific ingredients holds unique benefits:

  • Honey: Removes career and life obstacles.
  • Curd: Brings financial stability.
  • Sugarcane juice: Attracts Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings.
  • Chanting "Om Parvatipataye Namah" 108 times while offering water prevents untimely troubles.

Puja Rituals For Maha Shivratri:

  • Bathe the Shivling with Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar).
  • Offer eight pots of saffron water and light a diya throughout the night.
  • Apply sandalwood paste and offer Bel leaves, bhang, dhatura, sugarcane juice, tulsi, and fruits.
  • End the puja with Kesar Kheer as prasad.

The Mythological Story Behind Maha Shivratri:

As per Hindu mythology, a dispute arose between Brahma and Vishnu over who was superior. To resolve this, Lord Shiva appeared as an infinite pillar of light (Shivling) and challenged them to find its beginning and end. Vishnu admitted his inability to do so, but Brahma falsely claimed to have found the top with the help of a Ketaki flower, which also supported his lie.

This angered Lord Shiva, who cursed Brahma that he would not be worshiped on Earth, and Ketaki flowers would never be used in his puja. Since this event took place on Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi, it became the chosen day for Maha Shivratri celebrations.
