Amar Singh Chamkila’s First Wife Gurmail Kaur Says She Got Along With Amarjot Kaur: 'She Cooked Sabzi, I Made Roti'

Amar Singh Chamkila’s personal life has been in the news once again after the release of his biopic. In a recent interview, Chamkila's first wife Gurmail Kaur spoke about her equation with Aamrjot.

Late Punjabi Singer Amar Singh Chamkila’s personal life has been in the news once again after the release of his biopic starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. The film, directed by Imtiaz Ali, is streaming on Netflix currently. Chamkila was assassinated along with his wife Amarjot in March 1988. For those who don’t know before marrying Amarjot, Chamkila was already married to Gurmail Kaur. He also has two daughters from his wife. In a recent interview, Gurmail spoke about her equation with Aamrjot.

In an interview with Mitti's YouTube channel, Gurmail said that their relation has always been cordial. “Chamkila would visit alone and not bring Amarjot along. But she did visit me sometimes. There was no tension between us. We used to mingle well with each other. While she cooked vegetables, I made roti. She didn’t know how to make rotis. Even after the second marriage, it wasn’t like she was more important and I wasn’t special. Chamkila used to treat us equally and brought us similar things.”

Gurmail on life after Chamkila's death
Talking about the aftermath of Chamkila's passing, Gurmail shared the challenges she faced amidst legal battles and raising their children. She also spoke about taking care of Chamkila's uncle, whose mental health deteriorated after the singer's demise. 

“The light of our house died. We had no one to financially support us. The children were small, where could I have gone? The money that he earned, we didn’t get any money because of the court cases that opened after his death. Cases went on for 15 years,” she said in the interview. 

“I juggled court cases, kids, and also took on the responsibility of Chamkila’s uncle. He was not mentally stable and often believed that Chamkila and Amarjot were alive,” Gurmail added.

Gurmail recently made a rare public appearance at the screening of ‘Aamar Singh Chamkila’ in Mumbai. A screening video shared by Diljit on Instagram shows Gurmail hugging the actor-singer on the red carpet. She also posed for a few pictures before going for the film screening.

Jaiman Chamkila on his relationship with his sisters and Gurmail
Chamkila and Amarjot’s son Jaiman Chamkila had also spoken about his relationship with his step sisters and Gurmail in an interview with Cine Punjabi last year. 

"I am in touch with Chamkila’s first family. I have two sisters from his first wife, Amandeep and Kamaldeep. The older is married and has two kids, and Kamal is getting married this year (2023)."    

Talking about Gurmail he said, "When I go to meet her, she greets me well but that’s it. From the beginning, it’s been this way. It is not her fault nor ours (the children's) fault.”
