Ajay Devgn On Performing His Iconic Split Stunt: 'Jab Hero Ka Baap Action Director Ho...'

Ajay Devgn addressed the question of whether or not his iconic split bike stunts were achieved using VFX.

New Delhi: This 1991 film by Kuku Kohli, ‘Phool Aur Kaante’, was Ajay Devgn's first appearance in a Bollywood film. In the film, Ajay Devgn stood split-legged on two motorcycles. It was a remarkable introduction to Bollywood. Several subsequent films, like the ‘Golmaal’ series and ‘Son of Sardar’, recreated this famous split stunt. In a recent interview, Ajay Devgn addressed the question of whether or not those stunts were achieved using visual effects. He also talked about the outcomes of the action scenes.

Ajay Devgn discussed his first split stunt in an interview with The Lallantop. He clarified, “Jab pehli baar shuru hua tha tab bhi VFX nahi tha aur baad me bhi VFX uss shot me nahi tha. Aur jab ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ aayi tab toh VFX tha hi nahi. (There was no VFX, I think even later VFX was not there in those shots. When ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ came, there was no VFX at all.

Ajay Devgn was asked if he repeated the split scenes in the same way on his own in the later films. To which he replied, “Jab tak kar paaya kiya. Ab sayad naa kar paau (I did as long as I could. Maybe, I won't be able to do it now.)

The actor reflected on the high expectations of performing stunts, saying, “Jab hero ka baap action director ho toh kuch daav pe nahi lagta. Jinhone conceive kiya scene, jonhone design kiya. Physically hoga nahi hoga se lena dena nahi hai. Mentally aapko karna hi padega. (When the hero's father is an action director then there is no risk. Those who conceived the scene, those who designed it. Physically it will not happen, there will be no giving up. Mentally you will have to do it).”

Reflecting on the risks involved in the action sequences, he recalled, “Haa kaafi kuch haddiyan tooti hai, kaafi kuch maarein lagi hain. Uss waqt itni precaution aur safety bhi nahi hua karti thi. Ab toh bohot kuch badal gaya. Aasan hogyi cheejein. But uss waqt action mein maare, har film me kuch na kuch lagna bohot zaruri tha (Yes, a lot of bones have been broken and a lot of injuries have been sustained. At that time, there was not so much precaution and safety. Now, things have changed a lot. Now, things have become easy. But at that time, it was very important to get accident in every film.)”

Ajay Devgn’s upcoming movie ‘Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha’
