Aamir Khan Says His Father's Slaps Would Leave A Mark On Face: 'Everyone At School Would Know'

Aamir Khan reveals how his father would slap him and brother Faissal as kids, leaving visible marks. He also reflects on his mother’s gentle nature and emotional influence on his life.

While promoting his upcoming film 'Sitaare Zameen Par', Aamir Khan offered a rare glimpse into his personal life, sharing childhood anecdotes and opening up about the impact his parents—especially his mother—had on his upbringing and career.

In a candid interview with Zee Music, the actor recalled moments of mischief growing up with his brother Faissal Khan and how their father, producer Tahir Hussain, believed in strict discipline—sometimes to the point of physical reprimand.

Aamir Khan on his father’s disciplinary methods

Reflecting on the contrasting parenting styles of his mother and father, Aamir said his mother, Zeenat Hussain, never needed to raise her voice to discipline them. “All she would say was, haye Aamir, aap aisa karenge? (How can you do this, Aamir?) That was her maximum daant (scolding), she’s very soft,” he recalled.

Describing his father as more stern, Aamir added, “Ammi and Abbu jaan were different personalities. I did an ad for Coke in which I say, jab carbon chapega (euphemism for slapping). We experienced that. When he would backhand me and Faisal, his ring would leave a mark on our faces. It would be embarrassing at school the next day because everyone would know we’d gotten disciplined.”

Mother’s emotional influence on Aamir Khan

While his father's presence brought order and fear, it was Aamir's mother who had a lasting emotional influence on him. Crediting her for shaping the person he is today, Aamir said, “I think whatever I am today is because of my mother. She has been a very big influence on me; she’s very sensitive. I think she’s very intelligent emotionally. I’ve learnt that from her.”

Sharing a memory from his childhood, he said, “I remember winning a tennis tournament when I was 11, and my mother wondered how the kid who lost to me and his mother would’ve been feeling. I felt so guilty in that moment for winning. I feel I have an inclination to social issues because of her.”

About Sitaare Zameen Par

Directed by RS Prasanna, 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is a spiritual successor to Aamir’s critically acclaimed 2007 film 'Taare Zameen Par'. This new chapter sees him take on the role of a disgraced basketball coach, who is ordered by the court to train a team of neurodivergent adults as part of his community service.

Also starring Genelia Deshmukh, the film features ten newcomers with special needs and is set to release in cinemas on June 20.
