Karnataka Govt Formation LIVE: BJP’s Yeddyurappa takes oath as CM

Karnataka Election Results 2018 LIVE Updates: After a nearly three-and-a-half-hour of hearing over the Congress-JD(S) combine's legal push to stall the government formation, Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stay BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa's swearing-in as Karnataka chief minister.

Karnataka Government Formation Latest News: BJP strongman BS Yeddyurappa today took oath as the 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka. Governor Vajubhai Vala administered the oath of office to Yeddyurappa at 9 a.m. in the 'Glass House' of Raj Bhavan amid tight security. Yeddyurappa, 75, took the oath in Kannada in the presence central and state leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party and newly-elected legislators and senior officials. The Congress approached the Supreme Court last night for a hearing on the issue and requesting a stay order on the swearing-in ceremony.  The apex court refused to stop the swearing-in function. It will hear the matter on Friday at 10:30 am. Governor Vajubhai Vala on May 16 invited Yeddyurappa to form the government in the State. BJP emerged as the single largest party but fell short of a majority in the election results announced on Tuesday. The Congress had said that it had offered its backing to the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) to form a government in Karnataka following a hung Assembly. Both parties had agreed on HD Kumaraswamy as next chief minister. The BJP bagged 104 seats, a gain of 64 , while the Congress notched 78, a loss of 44 seats, though its vote share was nearly two percentage points more than the saffron party. LIVE UPDATES BELOW
