'Feeling Extremely Sad', Says Kejriwal As Satyendar Jain Returns To Tihar Jail After SC Setback

The 69-year-old underwent a medical examination before being allocated a separate cell in the prison.

New Delhi: Former Delhi health minister and AAP leader Satyendar Jain returned to Tihar Jail on Monday following the Supreme Court's dismissal of his regular bail plea in a money laundering case.

"Jain arrived at Tihar jail in the evening. He was taken to jail number 7 after the formalities of lodging him in the prison were completed," a jail official said, reported news agency PTI.

The 69-year-old underwent a medical examination before being allocated a separate cell in the prison.

Jain left his Saraswati Vihar residence in northwest Delhi around 5.45 pm to surrender at the jail. Despite his counsel's oral request for a week's time to surrender, the Supreme Court rejected it.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called Satyendar Jain a hero for Delhiites, hours after the apex court dismissed his regular bail request.

"He is a hero for all Dilli wallas. He made arrangements for providing 24x7 electricity, free electricity, good govt hospitals, and mohalla clinics. Feel extremely sad for him and his family. God bless him," Kejriwal said in a post on X.

The court had reserved its verdict on Jain's regular bail plea on January 17.

Jain had been out on interim bail granted by the Supreme Court on medical grounds since May 26, 2023, after he suffered an injury in Tihar Jail's bathroom. The bail was extended multiple times, and he underwent a spinal operation in June last year.

Challenging the Delhi High Court's April 6, 2023 order dismissing his regular bail application, Jain had moved the apex court.

He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on May 30, 2022, on charges of money laundering through four companies allegedly linked to him. The arrest was made based on a CBI FIR registered against him in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
