Prayagraj: Many Fall Sick During 1st Day Of Shahi Snan At Maha Kumbh Amid Severe Cold, Juna Akhada Mahamandaleshwar Hospitalised

The weather in Prayagraj remained severe, with overcast skies and only brief appearances of the sun.

On the first day of Shahi Snan, a sudden drop in temperature, accompanied by icy winds and intermittent drizzle, left many saints, sages, and unwell individuals struggling at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on Monday. The central hospital at the event witnessed a surge in emergency cases, with 132 people seeking immediate medical attention. Most of the reported cases were related to cold and arising heart ailments. According to officials, all individuals who received treatment at the central hospital are safe.

In addition to emergency cases, a significant number of devotees visited the outpatient department (OPD) for treatment, as the cold weather persisted throughout the day.

The weather in Prayagraj remained severe, with overcast skies and only brief appearances of the sun. The cold intensified due to continuous icy winds, making it challenging for attendees at the Kumbh to endure the conditions.

During the Juna Akhara procession for the Shahi Snan, Mahamandaleshwar’s health suddenly deteriorated while he was seated on a chariot, blessing devotees. His followers administered CPR, after which the chariot was moved aside, and he was taken to the hospital for further treatment.

Rose Petals Showered On Devotees

Despite the challenging weather, the spiritual fervour remained high as devotees performed the 'Amrit Snan' at the Sangam on Makar Sankranti. Rose petals were showered on devotees, adorning the ghats and akharas with vibrant hues. Chants of “Jai Shri Ram” and “Har Har Mahadev” echoed across the banks, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere.

In a statement, the Uttar Pradesh government detailed the elaborate preparations for the flower showers.

"The Horticulture Department, under the directives of the Yogi Adityanath government, meticulously planned the flower showers for weeks. Special arrangements were made to procure and store rose petals to ensure an uninterrupted shower during bathing festivals," the statement read.

The Maha Kumbh, being held after a 12-year cycle, commenced on Monday at the Triveni Sangam and will continue until February 26. Official estimates indicate that around 1.75 crore devotees took a holy dip at the Sangam on the first day, with another 1.38 crore visiting by Tuesday afternoon.
