Delhi Election: Kejriwal Announces Free Water, Power For Tenants

Arvind Kejriwal has promised free electricity and water for tenants in Delhi if re-elected to power.

Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal has announced that his party would take decisive steps to extend the benefits of free electricity and water to tenants if it makes a comeback in the upcoming Delhi elections.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, the former Delhi Chief Minister spoke about concerns raised by tenants across Delhi.

"Wherever I go, I meet people living on rent who say they benefit from good schools and hospitals but are deprived of free electricity and water schemes," he said.

"We will ensure that after the elections, tenants, many of whom belong to the Purvanchal region, will also enjoy the benefits of free electricity and water," Kejriwal assured the voters.

Seeking a third consecutive term, the AAP has built its campaign around its welfare initiatives presenting free utilities and improved public services.

On Friday, he wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a 50 per cent exemption in metro fares for school and college students. He said that the Delhi Metro is a 50:50 project of the Central and state government and the cost will be borne in the same ratio to exempt 50 per cent fare from students in the national capital.

He also proposed free bus rides for these students in Delhi.

Last week, the AAP supremo announced that Resident Welfare Associations will be provided funds to hire private guards to ensure security in the neighbourhoods if re-elected to power.

In December, Kejriwal announced the Dr Ambedkar Samman Scholarship for higher education of Dalit students. The scheme would cover all expenses for Dalit students wishing to pursue higher education abroad.

Elections to the 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly will be held on February 5 while the votes will be counted on February 8.
