Tamil Nadu Woman, Newborn Die After Botched Delivery Attempt At Home In Ranipet

On Thursday, according to police, Jothi went into labour early in the morning and experienced severe pain and excessive blood loss.

A 31-year-old woman and her newborn baby died after she along with her mother attempted to deliver the baby at home in Arcot town of Ranipet district. The deceased . Jothi, had been staying at her mother Valli's house on Thirunavukarasu Street during her pregnancy. Her husband Tamilselvan (38) who was a resident of Salem remained at his house.

On Thursday, according to police, Jothi went into labour early in the morning and experienced severe pain and excessive blood loss. In a desperate attempt to deliver the baby at home, her mother Valli tried to assist with the delivery. However, Jothi soon faced complications. Reports suggest that while attempting to cut the umbilical cord, the newborn died immediately, and Jothi lost consciousness shortly after, as per a report on The New Indian Express.

Jothi's brother rushed her to the Arcot Government Hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival. In a bid to misrepresent the circumstances, Valli reportedly hid the newborn's body in a bag and took Jothi's body to the Ranipet Government General Hospital, claiming she had died there, police revealed.

The authorities have registered a case and sent the bodies of the woman and her infant to the Vellore Government Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination. Health officials confirmed that the infant weighed 2.8 kilograms and that Jothi's pregnancy had not been registered under the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) programme in Salem.

An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of death and to ascertain any lapses in prenatal care.

Meanwhile, the couple had been married for nine years now and she had got pregnant for the fourth time, reported Times of India.

Earlier, the government has warned multiple times against delivering babies at homes.
