Mahakumbh 2025: Saints and sadhus from across the world are gathering in Prayagraj for the holy dip. Let's explore the significance of the Amrit Snan for them during the Kumbh.

Mahakumbh 2025 Snan: The Mahakumbh is the largest religious event in the world. It began on January 13, 2025, in Prayagraj, and will continue until February 26. During the Kumbh, 13 Akhadas, including sadhus, saints, and Naga sadhus, set up their camps. Devotees from around the world gather at the holy Triveni Sangam to take a sacred dip in faith. The main highlight of the Mahakumbh is the royal or Amrit Snan.
For sadhus and saints, the Amrit Snan holds special significance. According to tradition, first, the sadhus, acharyas, mahants, Naga sadhus, aghoris, and female Naga sadhus take a dip, followed by the devotees. The royal bath during the Mahakumbh is referred to as the Amrit Snan. After Makar Sankranti, the Amrit Snan will be held on the day of Mauni Amavasya.
Significance Of Amrit Snan
In Sanatan Dharma, Amrit Snan holds special significance. Therefore, both sadhus and devotees eagerly await it. This bath is an opportunity to attain merit and purity. According to religious beliefs, Amrit Snan leads to the attainment of moksha and cleanses the impurities of the mind.
Significance Of Amrit Snan For Saints And Sadhus
Mahant Adittanand Shastri of the Agni Akhada mentioned that taking the Amrit Snan brings the merit equivalent to performing a thousand Ashwamedha Yajnas. After the Amrit Snan, sadhus and saints meditate on the deities and engage in discussions about knowledge.
Why Do Naga Sadhus Take The Amrit Snan First?
In the Kumbh, the bath of Naga Sadhus is considered a center of religious and spiritual energy. It is believed that when Adi Shankaracharya organised a group of Naga Sadhus for the protection of dharma, other saints invited the Naga Sadhus, who were protecting dharma, to take the first bath. Naga Sadhus are considered devotees and followers of Lord Shiva, and hence, they are given the privilege of taking the first dip, a tradition that continues to this day.
