Replica Of Aurangzeb's Grave Was Burnt, Rumours Spread About Quran Burning: CM Fadnavis On Nagpur Violence

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis addressed the violence in Nagpur, saying that a replica of Aurangzeb's tomb was burnt, leading to stone pelting and arson.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday spoke about the violence that took place in Nagpur earlier this week.

On Monday, large-scale stone pelting and arson were reported in several parts of Nagpur over rumours that a "chadar" with verses from the Quran was burnt during protests led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad seeking the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb.

Addressing the media, Fadnavis said he reviewed the incident with the police officers. The entire sequence of events and the actions taken have been reviewed, he added.

An FIR was booked over the incident, he said, adding that people were gathered after a rumour was spread that a verse from the Quran was written on it.

"The crowd pelted stones and committed arson. The police have taken preventive action. Based on CCTV footage, those who were rioting are being arrested," he said.

The CM vowed action against rioters saying they would be made to pay for the damages.
