'Chhaava Sparked Anger, But...': Devendra Fadnavis On Nagpur Riots

Nagpur Violence News: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said in the assembly that the movie 'Chhaava' had sparked people's anger and the Nagpur riots seemed to be pre-planned.

Nagpur Riots News: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said that the Vicky Kaushal-starrer 'Chhaava' seemed to have sparked people's anger. Fadnavis was speaking in the Maharashtra Assembly on the Nagpur riots.  

Calling for said, "This violent incident and riots seem to be pre-planned. Chhava movie has ignited people’s anger against Aurangzeb still, everyone must keep Maharashtra peaceful."

More than 50 people have been taken into custody so far and five FIRs have been registered, police commissioner Ravinder Singal said.

Referring to the rumours of the Quran being burnt, Fadnavis further said: "In Nagpur, Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal held protests. Rumours were spread that objects with religious content were burnt... It looks like a well-planned attack. No one has permission to take law and order into their hands."

Deputy CM Eknath Shinde earlier said: "Those who support Aurangzeb should read history and watch the movie 'Chhava'."

What Happened In Nagpur?

Violence erupted in Nagpur after rumours of the Quran being desecrated spread in the city. The violence erupted amid rumours that the Quran was burnt during a protest by a Bajrang Dal demanding the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb.

Another clash broke out in Nagpur's Hansapuri area and several houses and vehicles were vandalised late Monday night as the unrest grew amid demands for the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's tomb in this Maharashtra city.

The city saw tense scenes after Bajrang Dal members staged a demonstration near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in the Mahal area. Soon, rumours of the desecration of the Quran spread which triggered outrage, leaving six people and three policemen injured.

Stones were thrown at police personnel in Chitnis Park and Mahal, following which we had to use tear gas shells.
