Mumbai: Female Resident Doctor Abused By Patient, Family Members At Sion Hospital

The patient, who was in an inebriated state, abused the female resident doctor in the early hours of Sunday.

A female resident doctor was allegedly assaulted by a drunk patient and his relatives at Mumbai's Sion Hospital on Sunday morning, said a doctor from the hospital. The incident comes amid outrage over the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee medical student at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The attack on the female resident doctor in Mumbai took place at around 3:30 am, said Akshaya More, General Secretary of Sion-MARD and BMC-MARD.

The patient arrived after midnight with his 7-8 relatives and was involved in an assault before coming to the hospital, More told news agency ANI.

"... The patient arrived in casualty after midnight in an intoxicated state with 7-8 relatives. He was involved in an assault before he came to the hospital, and had injury marks on his face... Owing to his injuries, he was given an ENT reference around 3:30 am," More said.

The on-call resident doctor on duty in the ENT department, where he was given reference, was a female. When she undressed the wounds to examine them, the patient started abusing her verbally.

"The relatives, instead of controlling the patient, started verbally abusing the resident doctor. Things escalated to physical assault very quickly...," he added.

By the time security was called, the patient and the relatives had fled.

"Such incidents are very frequent and mostly go unreported but we could not let this one slide, especially after what happened in Kolkata...," More said.
