Lucky Yatra Scheme: Your ₹10 Mumbai Local Train Ticket Can Give You ₹50,000. Here's How

Mumbai's "Lucky Yatra Scheme" incentivised ticketed train travel by offering daily ₹10,000 and weekly ₹50,000 prizes to randomly selected commuters with valid tickets.

A the rush hour in Mumbai is now a 'gold rush' of sorts. If you are lucky, your ₹10 ticket could give you ₹50,000. Thanks to the newly introduced 'Lucky Yatra Scheme', train commuters are fattening their bank balance. The 'Lucky Yatri Scheme' is aimed at promoting ticketed travel in Mumbai's suburban railway network, offering daily and weekly rewards to lucky commuters.

What Is The 'Lucky Yatri Scheme'?

Under this scheme, one lucky passenger each day will win ₹10,000, while a bumper prize of ₹50,000 will be awarded to one commuter every week. The campaign, which started on March 20, ran for eight weeks, targeting regular local train users across Mumbai.

Goal: Reduce Ticketless Travel

The scheme is part of Central Railway's broader effort to curb the growing number of ticketless travellers, which, according to data, now accounts for nearly 20% of Mumbai’s daily 40 lakh commuters. On average, 4,000 to 5,000 ticketless passengers are caught every day.

By offering substantial cash rewards, the Railway aims to encourage passengers to purchase valid tickets or season passes, thus promoting responsible travel behaviour and reducing revenue losses.

How It Worked?

Winners will be selected randomly by Ticket Checkers (TCs) at railway stations. To claim the prize, selected passengers must show a valid ticket or season pass. Upon verification, the cash reward will be handed over immediately.

The scheme is open to all classes and types of ticket holders, whether travelling with a daily ticket or a season pass.

Passengers can also check if their Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) ticket has been selected by visiting http://www.luckyyatra.com and uploading their ticket details.

Passenger Reactions

The scheme has sparked excitement among Mumbai’s daily commuters. Ranjit Tripathi, who travels from Badlapur to CST, shared: "Just the thought of winning ₹10,000 on a ₹30 ticket makes me happy. For once, the Railways is offering something beyond fare hikes." Siddharth Tripathi, a regular from Dombivli to Andheri, added: "This is a great move to discourage ticketless travel — and the chance to win cash makes it even better."
