Jharkhand Hikes Power Tariffs By 6.34%: New Rates Effective May 1

Electricity tariffs in Jharkhand will increase by 6.34% from May 1, 2025. Rural households will pay ₹6.70 per unit, while urban consumers will pay ₹6.85 per unit.

The Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission (JSERC) on Wednesday, April 30, announced a 6.34% increase in electricity tariffs across the state. The revised rates will come into effect from May 1, 2025.

Under the new structure, rural households will now pay ₹6.70 per unit instead of the earlier ₹6.30, while urban consumers will see their rates rise from ₹6.65 to ₹6.85 per unit. The rate hike has come as a shock to many electricity users across Jharkhand.

JSERC member Mahendra Prasad confirmed the changes, stating that rural electricity rates have been increased by ₹0.40 per unit and urban rates by ₹0.20 per unit.

No Impact On Beneficiaries Of Free Electricity Scheme

The hike will, however, not affect those availing the state’s free electricity scheme. "Consumers who receive up to 200 units of free electricity per month will remain unaffected," said Prasad.

An official added that out of approximately 46 lakh domestic consumers in Jharkhand, nearly 40 lakh benefit from the monthly 200-unit free electricity provision.

Earlier, the Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) had proposed a much steeper 40.02% tariff hike, but the commission approved only a 6.34% increase.
