Heavy Rain Lashes Mumbai As Monsoon Reaches Maharashtra, IMD Issues Red And Orange Alert For Today
The India Meteorological Department has issued orange and red alerts, warning residents of continued heavy downpours in the city and surrounding areas of Mumbai and suburban areas in the coming hours.

Several parts of Mumbai were lashed by rain on Monday morning as monsoon reached Maharashtra. The city continued to be battered by intense rainfall overnight, which led to widespread waterlogging and major traffic disruptions.

On Sunday morning, several parts of the city reported waterlogging on roads, slowing down traffic and causing chaos during peak hours. Visuals from the city showed a heavy traffic jam in the city due to the rain.
The IMD had stated in a post on X that the depression over Madhya Maharashtra had moved nearly east-northeastwards with a speed of 20 kilometers per hour over the last six hours, as a result of which rain is expected to continue over the next few days.
"The Depression over Madhya Maharashtra moved nearly east-northeastwards with a speed of 20 kmph during past 6 hours, and lay centred at 2330 Hrs IST of yesterday, the 24th May 2025 over Madhya Maharashtra near latitude 17.5° N & longitude 75.3° E, about 100 km northeast of Sangli(Maharashtra), 70 km west-southwest of Sholapur (Maharashtra), 110 km southwest of Osmanbad (Marathwada) and 240 km west of Bidar (N. I. Karnataka)," the post read.
The weather department has also forecast the depression is expected to continue moving across Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and the northern interior regions of Karnataka, likely causing more rainfall in these areas.
A massive traffic jam was also reported on the Bhiwandi-Wada road in Maharashtra's Thane district on Thursday after the city received heavy rainfall late Wednesday night, severely damaging the road surface.
The rain created large potholes and slowed traffic movement. This situation was further aggravated by ongoing road construction work. The traffic congestion extended for around seven to eight kilometres, with many stranded for more than four hours.
