GARBA ROW: VHP Demand to Restrict Muslim Entry Sparks Political Controversy
A political controversy has erupted over the Vishva Hindu Parishad’s demand to restrict Muslim entry into Garba events during Navratri. Actor Shreyas Talpade said that people have traditionally celebrated festivals together and should continue doing so, describing the matter as more of a political question and saying he personally enjoys all festivals. Meanwhile, Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane has opposed Muslim participation in Garba events, alleging that some individuals enter using Hindu names and become involved in cases he describes as “love jihad.” He argued that restrictions should be applied on the basis of religious practices and compared the issue with participation in religious events of other communities. The Shiv Sena has questioned the apparent contradiction between political leaders promoting communal harmony abroad while making divisive statements domestically. The debate has therefore expanded beyond Garba arrangements into a wider political argument over religious identity, participation in festivals, communal harmony and alleged “love jihad.”
