Bengal Weather Forecast: Rain, Thunderstorms Prompt Orange Alert As Nor'wester Begins In Bengal Today
Bengal's soaring temperatures are likely to ease with thunderstorms from Thursday. Orange and yellow alerts have been issued for several districts with hailstorms and gusty winds possible.

The March temperatures are reaching unbearable levels in Bengal and residents of the state are dreading the weather in April and May. However, the India Meteorological Department [IMD] has predicted some relief with a thunderstorm forecast. However, orange and yellow alerts have been issued for multiple districts in Bengal for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The IMD has forecast rain with thunderstorms in all the districts of South Bengal from Thursday, March 20. This particular type of storm is called nor'wester (কালবৈশাখী or Kaalbaishakhi in Bengali).
The IMD alert said: "Thundersquall with gusty wind (50-60 kmph), lightning, hailstorm and light to moderate rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over Jhargram, Bankura, West Midnapore, East Midnapore and Hooghly districts. Thunderstorms with gusty wind (40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over the rest districts."
Thunderstorms From Today
Thunderstorms with lightning (কালবৈশাখী or Kaalbaishakhi) will occur in several districts today. There may be hailstorms in some places. In some districts, windspeed is likely to go up to 60 kmph, as per the forecast by the Alipore Meteorological Department. The Meteorological Office says that there is a possibility of thunderstorms in almost all districts of South Bengal from Thursday.
Moisture will enter the state from the Bay of Bengal and the windspeed is going to be favourable for rain, said the IMD. Therefore, there is a high possibility of thunderstorms in almost all districts of South Bengal on March 20, 21, and 22.
There is a possibility of the Kaalbaisakhi occurring in Bankura, Jhargram, West Medinipur, Hooghly, and East Burdwan on Thursday. On Friday, the nor'wester will move north of Bengal on Friday.
Scattered rainfall is likely to occur in all districts of South Bengal on Friday as well. On Saturday, March 22, there is a possibility of heavy rain in Birbhum, East Burdwan, Murshidabad, Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore. Scattered light to moderate rains with thunderstorms are also likely in other districts, including Kolkata.
Scattered rains are likely in almost all districts of South Bengal on Sunday, March 23. There is a possibility of heavy rain in East and West Midnapore, North and South 24 Parganas in South Bengal. There is a possibility of rain in isolated places of East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas in South Bengal on Monday, March 24.
Due to the thunderstorms, the temperature is also likely to drop slightly this week.
Rain In North Bengal
Light to moderate rain will occur in all districts of North Bengal on Friday and Saturday. Wind speed is likely to go up to 40 kilometres per hour. The windspeed may be high in Malda, South Dinajpur and North Dinajpur.
Rain is also forecast in the districts of North Bengal on Sunday, March 23. The rain spell may continue till Monday in Darjeeling and Kalimpong in North Bengal.
The Alipore Meteorological Department also said that there is an active cyclone in Assam. There is a double axis. One axis is from Chhattisgarh to Karnataka. It passes over Telangana. The other axis extends from Karnataka to Kerala. A new western storm has entered the hilly areas of north-west India.
