As Kolkata Gears Up For Verdict In RG Kar Rape Case, Here's A Look At Everything That Has Happened So Far

The Sealdah court is set to deliver its verdict in the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and killed in August 2024, sparking outrage and protests.

A sessions court in Kolkata's Sealdah is all set to deliver its verdict in the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case toady, in which a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the college was raped and murdered in August last year.

The body of the doctor was found in the seminar room of the state-run hospital on August 9, 2024, which led to nationwide outrage and prolonged protests.

Here is a timeline of events of RG Kar rape and murder case:

August 9: A semi-naked body of a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor was found inside a seminar hall of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. As per the details, the woman was identified as a second-year student of the chest medicine department and was on duty on August 8-9.

August 10: Sanjay Roy, the main accused, was arrested by Kolkata Police. The autopsy report of the doctor confirmed that she was sexually assaulted before she was murdered.

August 12: The principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Dr Sandip Ghosh, stepped down from his post.

August 13: The Calcutta High Court ordered the former RG Kar Principal Ghosh to take an extended leave. The investigation was also transferred to CBI from the Kolkata Police.

August 14: A CBI team begins a probe. The accused was taken into the custody by the CBI officials.

August 15: A large crowd of unidentified men barged into RG Kar Medical College and obstructed the overnight protest by doctors.

August 16: At least 19 people were arrested for vandalism at RG Kar Hospital.

August 17: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) called for a one-day nationwide strike of doctors.

August 19: CBI grilled ex-RG Kar hospital Principal about the gruesome incident. A local court granted CBI permission to conduct a polygraph test on the accused. 

August 20: The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the matter. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud constituted a 10-member task force to formulate a national protocol for ensuring the safety and security of doctors. 

August 21: Kolkata police suspended three officers over vandalism at RG Kar hospital. The CISF took over security at the hospital. 

August 22: The Supreme Court reprimanded Kolkata Police for delay in taking action in the case.

August 24: Lie detection test were conducted on the primary accused.

August 26: The Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj announced the “Nabanna Abhijan” march on August 27 and sought West Bengal CM’s resignation.

September 10: Junior doctors turn down West Bengal government’s invite for talks.

September 11: The Mamata Banerjee-led state government rejected junior doctors' demands for the CM's presence and a live broadcast during talks.

September 14: The CBI team arrested former RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh and a Kolkata police officer over delays in the registration of FIR and missing evidence.

October 3: West Bengal Junior Doctors Front started a hunger strike in Kolkata demanding justice for the trainee doctor, and safety and security for the medical professionals, as reported by India Today.

October 7: The CBI filed a chargesheet against accused Sanjoy Roy in the case.

October 21: The protesting doctors ended their hunger strike after meeting with West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee.

November 4: The CBI framed charges against Sanjoy Roy.

November 11: Trial commenced at Sealdah court.

November 12: Bail granted to the accused in the case. This happened due to a delay in filing the chargesheet. 

November 29: The CBI filed chargesheet in the RG Kar financial irregularities case and Sandip Ghosh was named in the case.

January 18: Sealdah court to announce its verdict in the case.
