Whirlpool Fires 651 Workers At Amana Plant Amid Declining Demand — Details
The company stressed that the decision to lay off was driven solely by the need to adjust to reduced demand for certain appliances

Whirlpool Corporation has announced that the firm is laying off 651 employees at its manufacturing facility in Amana, Iowa, effective June 1, 2025. This reduction, which accounts for roughly one-third of the plant’s workforce, is attributed to falling consumer demand for specific refrigeration products produced at the site.
Reasons Behind The Layoffs
In an official statement, Whirlpool clarified that the layoffs are a strategic move to align production with current market conditions, not influenced by external factors like tariffs. The company highlighted that the decision was driven solely by the need to adjust to reduced demand for certain appliances.
"Whirlpool Corporation has made necessary adjustments to production at its Amana operations to align with current market conditions driven by consumer demand. This has resulted in the announcement of a workforce reduction of approximately 650 employees within specific production teams at the facility. We are committed to supporting affected employees through this transition by providing access to onsite HR support and a dedicated employee support line, an employee assistance program, and guidance on unemployment benefits through Iowa Workforce Development,” said a Whirlpool spokesperson to TV9.
Support For Affected Employees
Whirlpool has pledged to assist the impacted workers during this transition by offering onsite HR support, access to an employee assistance program, and guidance on unemployment benefits through Iowa Workforce Development.

Criticism From Labor Unions
The layoffs have drawn criticism from labor unions and advocacy groups. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), representing many of the affected employees, expressed deep concern over the decision, highlighting the significant impact on the local community, which heavily relies on jobs provided by the Amana plant.
The Iowa Federation of Labor AFL-CIO also condemned the layoffs, calling them "outrageous," especially given Whirlpool’s reported $17 billion in sales last year. Union leaders are urging state legislators to reinstate recently reduced unemployment benefits, arguing that the cuts leave displaced workers with limited options amid economic uncertainty.
