Onion Prices Reach Rs 80 Per Kg, Causing Havoc On Households

The prices climbed to reach Rs 70-80 per kg at wholesale markets in Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow, among others

Onion prices surged across major markets in the country adding on to the worries for consumers. The prices climbed to reach Rs 70-80 per kg at wholesale markets in Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow, among others.

Earlier, the price of the commodity was ranging near Rs 40-60 per kg, reported ANI. Citing a seller in a Delhi market, the report said, “The price of onions has risen from Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kilo. We source it from the mandi so the prices we receive from there affect the prices on which we sell it. There has been a reduction in sales because of the price hike but people are still purchasing it since it is an important part of food eating habits here.”

The media agency quoted another buyer, Faiza, and said that onion prices have caused major distress to customers. “The price of onions has shot up even though it should have come down according to the season. I purchased onions at 70 Rs per kilo. It has affected food-eating habits in the household. I appeal the government to atleast reduce the prices of vegetables that are eaten every day,” the buyer said.

As of November 8, 2024, the onion prices ranged near Rs 80 per kg in Delhi. Another buyer told the media agency that the jump in onion prices has impacted the budget for households. Notably, onion prices started climbing ahead of the Diwali festival and have continued to soar since then. This increase was due to heavy rainfall in several onion-producing states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. This resulted in an increase in inflation which hit a nine-month high in September.
