Toyota Innova Hycross Hybrid Long Term Review: Most In-Demand MPV?

In terms of efficiency, the Hycross claims 23kmpl plus for the hybrid while in the real world we got 14kmpl for a mixed city use. With eco mode and acceleration capped, we got 16 kmpl

The Innova Hycross currently sits on a high waiting list and buyers are queuing up for it. In its new Hycross avatar it has been a strong seller while dominating this price point. The hybrid version crosses the Rs 30 lakh price bracket in its top-end form so to find out more, we lived with the car for a few weeks to see how much of a difference it is over the older Crysta. We have previously driven the Hycross before of course but now after having lived with it for a few weeks and driven around 5,000 km, the verdict is clear.

In terms of efficiency, the Hycross claims 23kmpl plus for the hybrid while in the real world we got 14kmpl for a mixed city use. With eco mode and acceleration capped, we got 16 kmpl. This means it is much more efficient than other big MPVs or SUVs at this price bracket. We took the car on a road trip and with a full tank it will easily do 800-900km with careful driving.

This means the range is excellent and you need to refuel at all on big trips. After spending a lot of time with the car, the Hycross proved to be a comfortable mile muncher. The hybrid powertrain is perfect for smooth cruising and it is suited to it. Compared to the Crysta it is easier to drive and in the city at low speeds you can move around in electric silence.

The Innova Hycross is best as a cruiser while lacking some diesel torque but it is effortless at triple digit speeds while feeling more car-like to drive. When pushed hard, the CVT does get loud and it is best to take a notch down in terms of driving it aggressively. We also felt at low speeds, the ride quality is a bit firm while not having the toughness of a Crysta. However, it is much more refined and the cabin is a massive leap forward.

Space is huge and it is very comfortable. That said, the 360 degree camera resolution is surprisingly grainy while some of the plastics do not belong on a Rs 30 lakh car. However, the second row seats are comfy and space is unrivalled. We feel the hybrid version makes sense for the efficiency and ease of use while it is more expensive but for comfort, efficiency, ease of use and reliability, few cars can match the new Hycross.
