Uttar Pradesh: UP Flood Crisis Intensifies as Rivers Swell and Heavy Rain Disrupts Life

Heavy rainfall and rising river levels are worsening the flood situation across Uttar Pradesh. In Chitrakoot, the rapidly rising Mandakini River has flooded several shops around Ram Ghat, while residents have been moved away from vulnerable areas. In Sonbhadra, torrential rain has flooded homes and damaged roads, bridges and culverts. Water and debris have also affected agricultural fields, damaging crops and disrupting connectivity between villages. In Varanasi, the Ganga’s water level is nearing 66 metres, affecting connectivity between ghats and forcing the famous Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat to be shifted from the riverfront to a rooftop. Boat operations have also been suspended. Prayagraj’s George Town has witnessed severe waterlogging, with several feet of water covering roads. In Bahraich, the rising Ghaghara River has raised concerns after heavy rainfall in Nepal, while large volumes of water have been released from the Girijapuri Barrage. In Shravasti, the Rapti River has crossed its danger mark, increasing concern in nearby villages. Authorities remain on alert, with relief operations continuing in flood-affected districts including Farrukhabad, Ballia and Lakhimpur.
