SUVs Rule The Roost As India Is Slowly Falling Out Of Love With Hatchbacks
The Tata Punch in its ICE and EV avatar has become a huge hit with its styling being a clear reason along with the ground clearance, safety record and the wide array of variants
The once dominant hatchback now has competition in the form of the micro SUV and that has become the new family car of choice for first time car buyers with the Tata Punch being the new best selling car in India- twice in a row. The Tata Punch sold 19,158 units in April while the Wagon R sold 17,850 units. The Tata Punch in its ICE and EV avatar has become a huge hit with its styling being a clear reason along with the ground clearance, safety record and the wide array of variants.
Not just the Punch as SUVs are taking around half of the top 10 best selling car positions with the likes of the Maruti Fronx, Brezza, Hyundai Creta, Mahindra Scorpio dominating the sales charts. The Punch though is the new best selling car in India and it has been due to constant updates for the car along with launching of the CNG variant too has helped sales. It is also clear that sub 4m SUVs occupying the below 10 lakh space have been steadily poaching small car buyers with the success of the Punch and Fronx plus Brezza.
The Fronx being the SUV version of the Baleno outsold the premium hatchback. Going forward, the rise of the SUVs will be felt even more as more and more SUVs join the mass market segment as hatchbacks start to lose favour. It would also mean that the small car makers would also have to launch more SUVs like Maruti Suzuki has done with its Fronx in order to attract customers. Not just that as Hyundai and Mahindra are registering huge sales with their SUVs which comfortably cost above Rs 10 lakh and which also show the huge craze for SUVs right now.
